Croatian Funeral Services

Croatian Funeral Services Sydney

Death is something inevitable, but the way that different cultures mourn the death of their loved ones can be quite different. If you are part of a Croatian community, it will no doubt be very important to you that your deceased family members have the traditional Croatian funeral service that they would expect. Blessed Funerals specialise in Croatian Funerals.

A Catholic tradition in Croatia

While some other minority religions do exist in Croatia, around 86% of the population of the country are Roman Catholics, and this means that Croatian funerals tend to follow Catholic traditions. A Catholic funeral is, first and foremost, a time for grieving and mourning of the deceased’s friends and family. While some other traditions might place an emphasis on celebrating life, the Catholic funeral is very much a time to mourn. For this reason, it is expected that attendees would wear all black, or at the very least, dark colours.

Typical Croatian funeral customs

Following the death of a person of Croatian descent, there are some customs that might seem strange to outsiders. First of all, the friends and family will decorate the house of the deceased as a kind of vigil. As well as bells being rung at the church, bells will also be rung at the house when the body is removed to signal that the body is on its journey to the earth.
It can also be worth knowing that chrysanthemums are the traditional flower to be laid on graves.

Songs at Croatian funerals

The song choices at a Croatian funeral may differ slightly from those of a traditional Catholic service. Although Catholic hymns are certainly welcomed as Croatian funeral songs, it is not uncommon to hear traditional folk songs as well. A popular song at Croatian services is called “Fala”, which translates as “Thank you”, and is many centuries old. Croatian funeral directors will also be able to recommend appropriate funeral songs for the service.Catholic Cemeteries Crematoria
